Velocity Commercial Interior - Sheffield
Consultancy, architectural and interior design services for a multi-disciplinary practice in Sheffield.
This project was undertaken by SIX Architecture + Design, which became part of Byrom Clark Roberts in August 2016. The Sheffield branch of a major multi-disciplinary consultancy required architecture + design services for their proposed relocation to Velocity Village, a new mixed-use complex in Sheffield City Centre. [NOTE: Since completion of the project in 2010, the consultancy has moved to alternative premises.] Preliminary floor layouts had already been produced by Helen Winfield at HWDesign and SIX AD were appointed to progress the plans, provide design and consultation services, and provide technical support to HWDesign.
As part of the development of a reception area for a prominent office space in the Sheffield city centre, the Practice was given the opportunity to design the reception desk; in collaboration with HWDesign and Interior Surfaces Ltd. SIX AD produced a functional, elegant and minimal design that embodied the client’s aspirations as a forward looking multi-disciplinary practice.
Challenges + Opportunities
The Velocity Village complex was at an advanced stage in the overall build programme, however the buildings were still incomplete at the beginning of the project. SIX AD provided schedules to describe the extent of the fit-out which were in turn used within the tenancy agreement. SIX AD undertook a detailed compliance survey of the building shell, in order to determine elements that required further work to secure Building Regulations approval, and any risks relating to discharge of Planning Conditions. SIX AD worked with HWDesign and the client to catalogue the furniture and produce accurate proposed layouts, incorporating individual items; ensuring that each item would fit perfectly.
The reception desk had to incorporate a number of practical details and overcome many technical challenges. The desk had to allow a member of staff to operate as a receptionist while offering a fully functional work station. The staff and visitor in / out procedures also had to be managed from the desk, in addition to the intercom and telephony reception duties. The client’s existing systems were traditional and included maintaining hard-copy records of all documents and procedures. The successful deployment of the proposed design required that more contemporary technologies to be endorsed by senior management and adopted by reception staff.
SIX AD were appointed to assist in a mainly technical and consulting capacity. However, we were also able to present proposals to the client illustrating a number of opportunities to demonstrate their forward looking ethos and in turn refresh their brand. As well as providing furniture layouts, SIX AD liaised with the design team to provide co-ordinated ceiling and floor layouts, partition layouts, glazed screen details, schedules of new furniture and colour schemes. In addition to providing kitchen, meeting room, conference / board room design schemes, SIX AD produced designs for the new reception area. This required the creation of a new doorway, works to the ceiling to accommodate the steps in level between the reception and main office, in addition to the design of a bespoke illuminated back-panel and reception desk.
The original concept for the reception desk was developed with HWDesign and included a monolithic rectangular form, with an illuminated front panel. The desk was modelled in 3D using Autodesk Revit to produce visualisations, working drawings and to refine the design. The final design included a pop-up LCD monitor cover and slide out keyboard tray, door release button and LCD illuminated front and side panels. The desk was finished in White Corian and was fabricated and installed by Interior Surfaces Ltd of Hillsborough.
SIX AD produced the GA Floor Layouts for the Lease Agreement, as well as the detailed GA setting out drawings, including setting out of partitions, fixtures and fittings. We carried out the conceptual and detailed design of the reception desk / area, and produced finish material sample boards and finishes schedule. SIX AD produced proposals for the integration and extension of corporate branding throughout the new office space, kitchen / kitchenette layouts, board room and conference room design schemes.
The reception area was particularly well received by the Sheffield based staff, as well as the Board members that attended the opening ceremony.
