Brief

The main aspects of the brief was to undertake urgent repair and structural works to the mill building and mill mechanism, including the re-roofing of the property, stone repairs, re-pointing, structural masonry and roof frame works and making the structure weathertight.

Challenges + Opportunities

The property was a Grade II listed building set with in a conservation area of a National Park near York. The property had been put on to the English Heritage at Risk Register; therefore the works were specified and promptly agreed with the conservation officer, and then tendered and repaired within a particular timescale.

The Building Surveying Division of the practice was appointed to provide full architectural design services, specifying all the repairs, remedial works, conservation advice, project management and full contract administration, liaison with the contractor, conservation officer and others. Provision of budget cost control advice services including agreeing cost variations, cost reporting negotiating and settlement of the final account and issuing interim payment certificates.
