Langsett Avenue - Sheffield
A rear extension bringing unity between house, garden and family.
This project was undertaken by SIX Architecture + Design, which became part of Byrom Clark Roberts in August 2016. SIX Architecture + Design were appointed to design a rear extension to a semi-detached property in Wadsley, Sheffield; bringing unity between house, garden and family.
Challenges + Opportunities
Using the 3D model, we addressed issues relating to level differences between the internal floor and the exit from the proposed folding doors at the garden level.
After submitting the scheme to the Local Authority, it became clear that the Planning Officer had concerns over the scale of the proposals and how that would affect the neighbouring property.
Utilising the data embodied in the 3D model, we generated a sun-path analysis and we were able to prove that the extension would cause minimal overshadowing to the neighbour’s property.
As part of the planning process, we agreed to omit the split internal floor levels originally included and we were also able to reduce the threshold height of the folding doors, the windows and the main roof.
The extension incorporated many of the design features of the main house, including a slate roof covering, imperial brick sizes and swept window heads.
A partial structural frame was required to allow for the ceiling to be installed at the underside of the roof rafters; the frame also bracing the large openings from the existing kitchen and the over the folding external doors.
"The completed extension exceeded the original brief. The new light filled space has become the hub of our home. The link with the outside has enhanced our use of the garden and the attention to detail has ensured it blends sympathetically with the original house.
