Birkdale School - Brocksford Pavilion

Birkdale School - front view

Byrom Clark Roberts was commissioned by Birkdale School to design a sports pavilion to replace an existing building which was too small and in a poor state of repair.  The site is in the Green Belt and adjacent to an ‘Area of outstanding natural beauty’.

Brief

The building was designed to meet Sport England changing room accommodation requirements. The brief required a facility which would cater for 600 pupils on a weekly basis. 10 changing rooms with showers, male and female changing, two first aid rooms, store rooms, a seminar room/ hospitality suite with a kitchen and a tiered balcony overlooking the sports pitches. The building is divided into clean and dirty boot areas.

Challenges + Opportunities

Birkdale - inside

The Planning Authority imposed a restriction on height and floor area. After prolonged negotiations with the Planning Officer permission was granted for an enlarged sports pavilion. Due to the exposed site and the risk of vandalism the choice of materials was a prime consideration. Textured block and natural slate was used with metal standing seam roofing above the main entrance and roof terrace/ viewing gallery.

The pavilion is also used out of school hours by a local sports club and therefore the interior had to be carefully designed with this intensive use in mind; textured block is used up to dado height with painted block or plaster used above providing cleanable surfaces. Ceramic tiling is used throughout the shower areas.

Design

The building is constructed from a steel frame. To reduce the scale of the two-storey building the first floor is built into the roof space. The roof terrace is tiered with the lower tier level with the playing field. The building utilizes the natural fall of the site with the first floor balcony level with the sports pitch.
