Altrincham Baptist Church
Provision of a new welcoming entrance extension, along with internal re-ordering to maximise the seating capacity of the worship space, and provide meeting rooms and other facilities.
The Design Brief for the project included the provision of a new welcoming entrance extension, compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, repair and refurbishment of the building fabric, internal re-ordering to maximise the seating capacity of the Worship Space and to provide meeting rooms and other facilities, and new heating and electrical installations.
Challenges + Opportunities
The building is located on a sloping site with the existing main entrance level accessed by external stairs from the main road and a secondary entrance to the rear leading onto the lower basement level. The proposed design had to open up the building to everyone; providing a level access into the building and means of accessing all floors of the building with only limited space available.
The new glazed entrance creates a welcoming entrance to the front of the building with level access from the street. A new platform lift and staircase provide access to the upper and lower ground floor levels. A further platform lift provides access to the rear accommodation. Internally the building has been extensively re-ordered and refurbished. The brickwork to the front gable wall has been carefully repaired with original detailing restored, cleaned and repointed. The roof coverings have been replaced in reclaimed slate, with warm roof construction and passive stack ventilation units with integral solar boost fans.
